Is this an american thing to do ?

ive been watching ALOT of cooking videos on youtube recently and ive noticed over the christmas period they do ALOT of baking i.e cookies, cakes, brownies for gifts and not just a rubbish package mix but really nice homemade cookies and cupcakes ...here in the UK people dont do this for school occasions or to give to people as gifts ,i find if schools ask for cakes for cake sales etc people find it much more easier to pick up a packet in the local supermarket ...seems like the american folk (women in particular) do alot of baking and cooking for there families ...hmmm i think i need an american wife ?

however i did notice alot of this cooking is more 'down south' rather then someone from NY

am i correct or is it just houseifes sharing there recipes ?Is this an american thing to do ?
There is a whole lot of America beyond NY and down south.

And yeah, most women like to bake special things for special occassions.

Please don't make generalizations about your own country either.
Its not just a holiday tradition or a school one. Its a requirement for a funeral, for the elderly who can't bake anymore, new moms, graduation parties....ect.lol By the way......we make nineteen different kinds of Christmas cookies, every year. My mom and grandma did, and even my five sisters all do at the very least twelve kinds every year. Usually, its delicacies passed down through the generations. We were taught to bake young and its a hobby for almost all of my grandmother's granddaughters, plus the greats (even quite a few of the boys learned!). Its a gift from the heart, often times to comfort and let others know we care.Is this an american thing to do ?
I am from Arkansas and can say our favorite Christmas gifts are ideally an assortment of homemade goodies.People in our family have their unique items they only make around Christmastime. They are made with love and care and nothing comparable can be bought off any store shelf..it may be southern predominately,I'm uncertain.
There is no such word as ALOT. It's two words. A LOT.

Here in the UK people do proper baking, they don't just but a rubbish packet mix.

Well obviously some do, so it must be these people that you know.Is this an american thing to do ?
i find that a lot of americans do use a mix from a box... i saw lots of 'fancy' cake recipes that use a base of a cake-mix... i never use them...

Yes
Yes, this is pretty usual. Or a lot of people will doctor up a cake mix to make it an awesome cake, rather than just a box cake. I certainly wouldn't say everyone does it though. And, admittedly, holidays are the only days when a lot of people cook at home, and the only time they would bother to bake something from scratch. I'd guess box mixes and packaged cookies would be a lot more common than the scratch cookies at a bake sale, though. Not entirely sure, however, since I've never actually been to a bake sale.

I make pretty much everything from scratch though. We don't buy pre-packaged food.
Most of us have a few favorite recipes for cookies, sweet breads, and cakes. Often, they're made from the same recipes our mothers or grandmothers used when we were kids. Christmas is a special time of year, and baking special treats is part of the tradition. It's mostly done by women and children, but some men enjoy baking, too. My husband likes to make bread and he's good at it. One of my brothers-in-law and his two sons often bake cookies; another brother-in-law makes pies.

Home cooking and baking was much more prevalent before women joined the work force. Now we do sometimes resort to packaged mixes, but not at Christmastime.
