Hello, so as you all may know (or not). I have started on my next language which is Mandarin. My main concern about this language is that even though I try so hard to remember things I'm not able to pick-up words as fast as before. Don't get me wrong, I don't lack the motivation; I just clearly can't pick-up words as I have before from learning Spanish. Do you think I should start on an easier language? If so, can you give me some languages that would be easy for me? I am fluent in English, Tagalog, and Spanish. I tried French and figured I hated it. Maybe Italian? I prefer something practical and a language that has many speakers and is not as hard to learn.
Thank you for your help :)What should I do when I'm not able to pick-up words as much as before?
Harder language, harder to pick up words. Maybe you are just burned out on languages for a while. I think the fact that you hated French is evidence for that hypothesis, because French should have been easy for you after Spanish. Why do you need more than three? What should I do when I'm not able to pick-up words as much as before?
Try some mnemonic devices, like linking in your mind each new character or word with a clear mental image that makes sense to you. (see below for some examples)
Also learn the etymology of Chinese characters, like for example the fact that 人 (Pinyin: "rén"; 'man, person, people') originally depicted a man with arms and legs, and now resembles the legs of a human being. While 大 (Pinyin: "dà"; 'big') shows a person (人) with arms stretched out as far as possible, and 小 (Pinyin: "xiǎo"; 'small; tiny; few; young') shows a person (人) with lowered arms, implying the meaning of small. What should I do when I'm not able to pick-up words as much as before?
Some english words are similar to spanish. Even if it's just a little bit...
But there are no similarities between mandarin and english. Mandarin is a totally different language.
So that's normal...
You'll probably have the same kind of difficulty if you try to learn an arabic language for example...
the human brain easily picks up new languages up to puberty. Then the connections "harden" and languages are less easy to pick up. It will just require more work and maybe new teqniques.
